It is the kind of question that seems easy until you actually try to answer it.
The Triangle and the Unknown: Geometry, God, and the Human Search for Meaning
My son asked me a simple question:
Why does the pyramid, or the triangle, represent the divine?
It is the kind of question that seems easy until you actually try to answer it.
I could have told him about Egypt, Greek philosophy, Mesoamerican temples, Christianity, sacred geometry, or the countless places where triangles, pyramids, circles, spirals, and stars appear in human symbolism.
But none of those things really answers the question.
They only make it larger.
Why does a particular shape become sacred?
Why does geometry become a language for things that cannot be seen?
Why do human beings, across radically different civilizations, repeatedly turn toward simple forms when trying to express ideas about creation, eternity, heaven, order, life, death, and God?
Perhaps the answer begins with something much more uncomfortable:
We don't know what reality ultimately is.
And perhaps that is not a failure.
Perhaps that is the beginning of religion, philosophy, mathematics process, and symbolism itself.
God and the limits of knowing
There is a particular way of asking whether God exists that has always seemed strangely inadequate to me.
"Do you believe in God?"
"Do you not believe in God?"
The two answers are usually treated as opposites, as if the entire question could be settled by choosing one side.
But both statements primarily tell us something about the person making them.
I believe.
I don't believe.
The subject of the sentence becomes the speaker.
The question of God becomes an expression of personal allegiance, rejection, identity, or certainty.
But what if God is not an object sitting somewhere inside reality, waiting to be discovered alongside stars, planets, animals, and people?
What if the word God has historically been one of humanity's attempts to speak about the totality of what exceeds our ability to comprehend?
Not simply what we don't know.
But what we cannot contain within our perspective.
There is a profound difference.
I don't know what consciousness ultimately is.
I don't know why there is something rather than nothing.
I don't know what reality is beneath all of the models we use to describe it.
I don't know whether the universe is finite, infinite, closed, open, or something for which those categories are inadequate.
And even when science gives us increasingly powerful descriptions, the description remains a description.
We can model reality.
We cannot step outside reality and compare our model with the universe from somewhere beyond it.
We are not standing outside the system.
We are inside it.
Even the observer is part of what is being observed.
That makes the question of God fundamentally different from the question of another object.
God, in this sense, is not necessarily another thing.
God is the horizon at which our ability to comprehend things reaches its limits.
We don't even know what life is
Consider something much closer to us.
We are alive.
That seems obvious.
Yet what exactly is life?
We can describe metabolism.
We can describe reproduction.
We can describe DNA.
We can describe cells, proteins, electrical signals, evolution, ecosystems, and countless mechanisms associated with living systems.
But none of those descriptions necessarily exhausts the meaning of life.
We can take apart an organism and describe its components.
But at what point does the description of its components become an explanation of the thing itself?
And what happens when we move from life to consciousness?
We can describe the brain.
We can map activity.
We can construct computational models.
But a description of a process is not necessarily identical to the experience of that process.
This problem follows us everywhere.
The map is not the territory.
The word is not the thing.
The model is not the world.
And perhaps the greatest mistake we can make is assuming that because we can name something, we have therefore contained it.
Idea, Spirit, World
I find it useful to think about existence through three overlapping perspectives:
Idea
The realm of reason, relation, possibility, mathematics, structure, and intelligibility.
Spirit
The realm of process, information, organization, identity, consciousness, and whatever gives structure activity.
World
The realm of manifestation: bodies, matter, energy, stars, organisms, mountains, temples, and everything we encounter as phenomena.
This is not meant to be a scientific classification.
It is a philosophical lens.
And it resembles, in a very loose modern analogy, the relationship between reason, software, and hardware.
Hardware without organization is merely material arrangement.
Software without some medium of manifestation cannot appear to us as a functioning process.
And the idea behind a system is not identical to either the code or the machine.
Yet none of these layers is completely independent.
The analogy eventually breaks—and that is precisely why it is useful.
Reality is not a computer.
But the analogy helps us see the problem:
Are we only the hardware?
Or is there something about organization, information, experience, reason, and consciousness that cannot be adequately described by reducing everything to its material substrate?
I don't think we can simply assume the answer.
To say "we are physical" may already be too narrow.
Perhaps we are physical.
Perhaps we are more than physical.
Perhaps the distinction between physical and nonphysical is itself a conceptual distinction created by minds operating within the very reality they are trying to classify.
We should investigate before deciding.
The ancients did not separate the world as neatly as we do
One of the peculiarities of modern thought is how successfully we have divided reality into disciplines.
Physics.
Biology.
Psychology.
Religion.
Politics.
Astronomy.
Mathematics.
Philosophy.
Architecture.
For us, these are separate subjects.
For many ancient cultures, they were deeply interconnected.
The heavens were not merely astronomy.
The temple was not merely architecture.
The calendar was not merely timekeeping.
The king was not merely a political administrator.
Geometry was not merely mathematics.
The sacred was woven into the structure of society and the interpretation of nature.
This does not mean that ancient people possessed a secret unified science that we have forgotten.
It means that their questions were often organized differently from ours.
They were attempting to understand the whole.
And this is precisely why their symbols remain fascinating.
The triangle
Perhaps we can now return to the shape my son asked about.
The triangle is extraordinarily simple.
Three points.
That's enough.
Two points give us a line.
But three points can enclose space.
Three relationships can become one structure.
Three sides can create an inside and an outside.
And suddenly we have something more than a collection of points.
We have a whole.
The many becoming one.
This may be why the triangle is philosophically so powerful.
It is the smallest polygon.
The smallest enclosed geometric form.
The minimum number of points necessary to create a closed structure.
And yet it contains a mystery.
Because the triangle is simultaneously:
three things
and
one thing.
Its unity does not erase its multiplicity.
Its multiplicity does not destroy its unity.
The whole exists through the relationships between its parts.
Perhaps the triangle is older than its symbolism
Before humans called a triangle sacred, humans encountered triangular forms.
Mountains.
Flames.
Leaves.
Animal horns.
Converging rays.
Shadows.
The silhouette of things rising toward the sky.
And eventually we began to abstract.
We stopped seeing only this mountain and recognized something like mountainness.
We stopped seeing only this triangle and recognized triangularity.
This is where Greek philosophy becomes particularly important.
Plato's distinction between particular things and intelligible Forms asks us to consider whether the things we encounter participate in structures that are not reducible to any single physical example.
We draw a triangle.
But did we invent triangularity?
The physical drawing is ours.
The relationship is discovered.
The same is true of mathematical relationships throughout nature.
We invent symbols.
We discover patterns.
And that distinction is strange.
Because it means reason can encounter structures that seem to have existed before reason recognized them.
The Pythagorean mystery
The Pythagorean tradition pushed this intuition even further.
Number was not merely a method for counting objects.
Proportion, harmony, geometry, and mathematical relationship could reveal something about the order of the cosmos.
The famous tetractys—a triangular arrangement representing 1, 2, 3, and 4—became an important symbol of Pythagorean thought.
The significance is not simply that a triangle contains numbers.
It is that relationships can produce order.
One becomes two.
Two becomes three.
Three becomes four.
And their relationships produce a whole.
This is remarkably close to the mystery we keep encountering.
How does multiplicity become unity?
How does unity become multiplicity?
How does structure emerge?
How does something become intelligible?
And ultimately:
Why is there an intelligible structure at all?
The pyramid: an idea made into stone
A pyramid takes the abstract triangle and makes it physical.
The broad earth becomes narrower as it rises.
The many converge toward one point.
Horizontal becomes vertical.
Earth approaches sky.
The base is expansive.
The summit is singular.
The many becoming one.
Egyptian pyramids had specific historical, religious, funerary, political, and astronomical contexts. They should not be reduced to a simplistic equation of "triangle equals God."
But the form itself creates an experience.
You see something rising from the earth and narrowing toward the heavens.
The geometry becomes architecture.
The architecture becomes ritual space.
The ritual becomes cosmology.
And an idea becomes stone.
That is one of the most extraordinary things human beings do.
We turn invisible concepts into physical objects.
The sacred mountain
Mesoamerican civilizations provide another example, although their traditions should never be collapsed into Egyptian or Greek ideas.
Their pyramidal and stepped architectures created elevated sacred spaces.
The staircase matters.
You climb.
The ordinary ground falls beneath you.
The temple becomes higher.
The horizon changes.
The sky becomes closer.
Architecture turns movement into symbolism.
Again, we should not assume that every pyramid everywhere had the same meaning.
But we can recognize a recurring human gesture:
to elevate the sacred.
The mountain becomes an intermediary between earth and heaven.
The temple becomes an artificial mountain.
And human beings climb toward something they cannot physically reach.
The spiral: when the divine becomes process
If the triangle gives us structure, the spiral gives us movement.
A spiral returns toward its center while continuing to move.
It can represent growth without simple repetition.
Return without complete sameness.
Cycles without perfect circles.
Life, death, seasons, celestial motion, transformation.
The triangle says:
structure.
The spiral says:
process.
And this distinction matters because existence does not merely consist of things.
It consists of things happening.
Matter changes.
Stars form.
Organisms grow.
Cells divide.
People remember.
Cultures transform.
Ideas propagate.
Nothing remains perfectly still.
So perhaps another way humans encounter the divine is not through an eternal object, but through the mystery of process itself.
Why does anything happen?
Why does order generate change?
Why does change preserve patterns?
Why does life arise?
Why does consciousness arise?
Again, the question expands.
The stars: the eternal above
Then we look upward.
The stars were among humanity's oldest encounters with something that seemed larger and longer-lived than human existence.
Individuals die.
Generations disappear.
Cities collapse.
Empires vanish.
But the stars return.
They become calendars.
Navigation.
Agriculture.
Myth.
Ritual.
Gods.
The heavens become a canvas upon which humanity projects both its knowledge and its questions.
The stars are not necessarily divine simply because they are distant.
They became symbols of the divine because they confronted human beings with something that seemed to transcend the individual life.
Something apparently stable.
Something recurring.
Something beyond our reach.
Something that could be observed but never possessed.
The word, the world, and the Logos
There is another symbol that is perhaps even more important than geometry:
the word.
A word allows the invisible to become communicable.
The thing exists.
The mind forms an idea of the thing.
The word gives that idea a transmissible form.
But the word isn't the thing.
This distinction becomes particularly important in Greek philosophy through the concept of Logos, whose meaning changes across different thinkers and traditions but can encompass reason, account, discourse, and intelligible order.
And Christianity takes this concept somewhere extraordinary.
The Gospel of John begins with the Logos—the Word—and presents the Logos as foundational to creation before speaking of the Word becoming flesh.
Here we encounter something remarkably close to our threefold problem:
Idea.
Spirit.
World.
The intelligible becomes manifest.
The transcendent enters the finite.
The Word becomes flesh.
Whether one accepts the theological claim or not, the philosophical problem is profound:
How can what is beyond the physical become present within the physical?
The Trinity: unity without erasing relationship
And this brings us to Christianity.
The Trinity should not be treated as an afterthought to the ancient symbolism of the triangle.
It is one of the most sophisticated examples of the human attempt to think about unity and multiplicity simultaneously.
The Christian doctrine does not simply say there are three gods.
Nor does orthodox Trinitarian theology simply reduce Father, Son, and Holy Spirit to three costumes worn by one being.
It attempts to express something much stranger:
one God, three persons.
The historical vocabulary surrounding this doctrine—essence, nature, person, substance, hypostasis—is extraordinarily complex, and centuries of debate were devoted to precisely these distinctions.
But philosophically, the question is beautiful:
Can unity contain genuine distinction without becoming division?
The triangle gives us a simple visual metaphor for the problem.
Three points.
Three relationships.
One form.
The analogy does not prove the Trinity.
It shouldn't.
But it gives the mind a way of imagining something that ordinary arithmetic makes difficult.
Three can become one without the three disappearing.
And suddenly the triangle becomes more than geometry.
It becomes a visual language for relationship.
The oldest triangle may be the human one
Perhaps this is where the mystery becomes even more intimate.
Before the triangle became a symbol on a temple, a mathematical figure, a theological metaphor, or an architectural form, human beings already lived inside one.
Father. Mother. Child.
Three people.
One family.
Three identities.
One relationship.
The child is not simply another object added to the parents.
The family is something that exists through the relationship between them.
And the relationship itself produces something new.
Life.
Identity.
Memory.
Inheritance.
A future.
This may be why the triangle feels so deeply embedded in human experience.
The triangle is not only something we draw.
It is something we live.
And that makes the symbolism even more mysterious.
Perhaps our most primitive experience of "three becoming one" isn't mathematical at all.
It is relational.
But we should not turn every triangle into the same triangle
This is where caution matters.
An Egyptian pyramid is not a Christian Trinity.
A Maya temple is not Plato's Form.
A Pythagorean tetractys is not an Egyptian theological diagram.
A prehistoric spiral does not automatically contain the same meaning as every later spiral.
Human civilizations created their own symbolic systems.
Their similarities do not prove that they all possessed one secret doctrine.
But similarity can still be philosophically meaningful.
Because we can ask a different question:
Why do human beings repeatedly arrive at similar forms when attempting to represent things that exceed ordinary experience?
That question doesn't require us to erase cultural differences.
It asks us to investigate the common conditions of human existence.
We are the observers—but we are not outside the system
This is perhaps the most important correction to the modern picture.
We like to imagine ourselves as observers of reality.
But we are also phenomena within it.
A human being is part of the universe attempting to understand the universe.
A brain is part of nature attempting to understand nature.
A mind is part of reality attempting to understand reality.
And even an artificial intelligence processing information is still a process occurring somewhere within the physical and informational structure of the world.
None of us possesses the viewpoint from outside the entire system.
We can model.
We can abstract.
We can symbolize.
We can reason.
We can discover relationships.
But we cannot hold the totality of existence in our hands.
Ask for the complete shape of the universe.
We can produce theories.
We can describe observable geometry.
We can calculate possibilities.
But where is the observer standing when it asks for the shape of everything?
There is no obvious "outside" from which to look.
The question itself exposes the limitation.
The observer is inside the question.
This is why geometry becomes a language of the divine
Geometry is extraordinary because it sits between invention and discovery.
We invent the marks.
We discover the relationships.
We draw the triangle.
But triangular relationships do not depend upon our drawing.
We create mathematical notation.
But the relationships expressed by mathematics are not necessarily created by the notation.
We build models of nature.
But nature existed before the model.
This gives geometry a strange philosophical character.
It allows us to see reason discovering structure.
And perhaps that is one of the oldest intuitions behind the sacred.
Not:
"This shape is magical."
But:
"There is an order here that existed before I understood it."
The divine, then, becomes a gateway to the eternal unknown.
Not a convenient answer.
Not an excuse to stop thinking.
Quite the opposite.
A reason to keep thinking.
Belief should not be the end of investigation
There is something unfortunate about what religious traditions can sometimes become.
A question becomes a doctrine.
A doctrine becomes an identity.
An identity becomes a boundary.
And eventually the question that gave birth to the tradition disappears beneath the certainty of belonging to it.
The same can happen to atheism.
"I don't believe" can become just as intellectually closed as "I believe."
Both can become identities that protect a person from the discomfort of not knowing.
But genuine investigation requires something harder.
It requires being able to say:
I don't know.
Not as surrender.
As intellectual honesty.
The ancients were not all correct.
We are not all correct.
Science is not finished.
Philosophy is not finished.
Religion is not finished.
Human understanding is not finished.
And perhaps it never can be.
Because every answer creates another question.
Every model reveals another layer.
Every boundary exposes another horizon.
The triangle and the mystery
So perhaps my son's question has an answer after all.
Why does the triangle represent the divine?
Not because the triangle is God.
Not because every ancient civilization secretly agreed about its meaning.
Not because geometry proves the existence of a supernatural being.
And not because we have finally discovered the hidden code of the universe.
The triangle matters because it expresses something extraordinarily fundamental:
The many becoming one.
Three points become a structure.
Three relationships become a whole.
Multiplicity becomes unity without disappearing.
And perhaps that relationship is at the core of human experience.
Father.
Mother.
Child.
Self.
Other.
World.
Observer.
Observed.
Idea.
Spirit.
World.
Three things becoming something that cannot be understood simply by looking at any one of the three.
The triangle is therefore not an answer to the mystery.
It is a representation of the mystery.
And perhaps that is what symbols have always done.
They do not contain the things they represent.
They create a bridge between what we can perceive and what we cannot.
A pyramid takes an idea and makes it stone.
A spiral takes process and makes it visible.
A star takes the unreachable and places it within sight.
A word takes thought and gives it form.
A triangle takes relationship and gives it structure.
And somewhere beyond all of them remains the thing they are trying, imperfectly, to approach.
We call that horizon many names.
God.
The One.
The Absolute.
Logos.
Being.
Nature.
Reality.
The Unknown.
Perhaps the names matter.
Perhaps they don't.
What matters is that none of the names can contain what they name.
Because we are not outside the universe looking back at it.
We are inside it.
We are part of the process we are trying to understand.
And perhaps that is why, for thousands of years, when words begin to fail us, we start drawing.
Three points.
One shape.
The many becoming one.
And beyond the shape—
the mystery remains.
